Let’s be honest: having your photo taken can feel intimidating — and figuring out what to wear for headshots is usually the hardest part. As a Rapid City photographer who’s taken thousands of headshots over the past decade, I’ve got you covered with my six best tips for choosing outfits that look polished, flattering, and totally you.

Whether you’re prepping for corporate headshots, updating your LinkedIn profile, or getting a fresh photo for your personal brand, these quick tips will help you look and feel amazing.

1. Pick the Right Colors

Wear colors that make you feel confident and that bring out your natural glow. Jewel tones, blues (navy, denim, periwinkle), greens, coral — all look fantastic in photos.

Skip neons, lime green, or neon orange (they reflect onto skin in strange ways). All-white and pale pastels can wash you out, so steer clear of very light colors.

If you love to wear black, make sure it isn’t too heavy. Black works best when it has an interesting neckline, has some texture, and has a tailored fit. Dark blue is often a flattering alternative to black.

Pro tip: Solid colors and small prints photograph beautifully. Big, busy patterns? Not so much.

2. Dress for Your Role

Think of your headshot as a first handshake. What would you wear when meeting a new client or walking into an interview? That’s your starting point.

If your job has a signature look (chef’s coat, branded colors, etc.), consider incorporating it. It helps tell your story instantly and strengthens your personal or corporate brand.

3. Comfort = Confidence

If you’re constantly tugging at your sleeves or adjusting a neckline, it will show in your photos. Choose clothes that fit well and make you feel amazing — comfort translates directly into confidence in front of the camera.

4. Flatter with Fit & Details

Three-quarter or long sleeves are generally most flattering on camera. Keep jewelry simple so it enhances rather than distracts from your face.

Men — a well-tailored jacket is always a win (unless you’d never wear one in real life).

When in doubt, bring options! I’ll happily help you choose during your session.

5. Prep Like a Pro

A week before your session, start drinking extra water for glowing skin. The night before (or two if you can), prioritize beauty sleep (yes, it makes a difference!).

6. Keep Makeup Simple

Stick with your usual style, just slightly polished up. Avoid sunscreen moisturizers on photo day (they create shine). And if a last-minute breakout surprises you the week of your session — don’t stress. I handle light retouching, so you’ll always look your best.

✨ Chances are, you already own the perfect headshot outfit. But if a new top or jacket gives you that extra boost of confidence, go for it!
