Here’s a question I get asked quite often: How often should I update my headshots?
Here is my short answer:
You should update your headshot every one to two years — more often if you have a strong online presence, or if you’ve altered your hairstyle or look.
The important thing is to have a headshot that makes it easy for people to recognize you if they run into you on the elevator, or at Starbucks. After all, you are the face of your brand.
Here are a few other things to consider when updating your headshots:
Clean, well-lit headshots
Updating your photo every couple of years allows you to keep up with photography trends. You’ll appear more modern and relevant with today’s lifestyle headshots and with clean, well-lit photography.
Photos that flatter
I often hear that people don’t want to update their headshots because they like the way they looked when they were younger. But my clients have learned that a good photographer can flatter you exactly the way you look today. In fact, my clients tell me they like their current photo even better than older photos!
Full library of unique, personalized images
If you have a prominent social media presence, you may want to choose a branding session so you’ll have a full library of images for posts. Then, display one single headshot across all platforms for several months at a time to increase recognition. A full branding session 2-4 times a year should give you plenty of content for all seasons. And some influencers will choose to do a mini branding session once a month.
Relaxed and natural photos
If you’re behind the scenes at your company, you may be tempted to go 3 or 4 years between headshots, but I’d encourage you to try to get new headshots at least every 2 years. Not only will your colleagues and friends appreciate the updates, but you’ll feel more relaxed and natural the more often you get in front of the camera.
